New York, Tuesday, March 22, 2011 – Cultivating Aspiring Leaders (CAL) is now accepting online applications for its inaugural Leadership Training Institute (LTI). LTI is a four-part Saturday academy, which will be held in July at the New York office of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. Valerie Owolo, Masters Candidate, Columbia Teacher’s College, Roxanne Ryan, Strategy Consultant, International Finance Corporation, Elizabeth Whittington, Adjunct Professor at Trinity University, and other members of CAL’s Curriculum Committee have created a program replete with comprehensive lectures, assessments, interactive learning, role-playing, and panel discussions.

“A wise person reminded me, ‘your credentials are merely a ticket to a party. Whether or not you enjoy the party depends on who you meet and who will “dance” with you.’ We are teaching these students essential soft skills. In essence, we are teaching them how to dance,” said Charlotte A. Lewis, CAL President & Founder.

LTI’s curriculum includes, among other topics, a discussion entitled “Use Social Media to Own Your Name: Brand-Building and Professional Self-Awareness,” during which time the students will create a professional presence online and learn to defend against a negative online reputation. Part I of LTI also includes a panel entitled “Reach Back as You Move Forward: The Importance of Giving Back,” which will feature philanthropic leaders such as Robert Reffkin, founder of New York Needs You, Joshua Mercer, founder of Swish Dreams, and Chris Rolle, creator of the Hip Hop Project. Also, Michael Melcher, Partner at Next Step Partners and author of The Creative Lawyer, will discuss leadership styles and positioning for success during Part II’s “Your Leadership Brand: Understanding Your Values, Style, and Professional Identity.“

“An important aspect of our program is our emphasis on using leadership skills to give back to underserved communities. We are not only training students to be the next CEO, bank managing director, lead surgeon, or law firm partner. We are training LTI fellows to lead in their families and communities as well,” said Brandon Jones, Chair, CAL Student Outreach Committee and Member, Board of Advisors.

During Part III’s “The Power of Your Emotions: Emotional Intelligence and Professional and Personal Success,” a panel of legal professionals will discuss how to work and socialize in difficult environments and not take things personally. Panelists include Rossie Turman, Partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, Alphonzo A. Grant, Jr., Special Counsel at Sullivan & Cromwell, LLP, and Vivienne LaBorde, Associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP.

“Learning to deal with difficult situations and develop a mental toughness will give these students such an advantage as they approach college, the real world, and the workforce. It will really make a difference in helping them learn to persevere,” said Ms. Owolo.

Other presenters include Syreeta Gates, author of Just Be Cause and founder of the SWT Life, Dr. Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz, Professor at Columbia University, Patricia Louison, Assistant Dean of Georgetown School of Business, Ladell Graham, co-founder of Smith, Graham & Company, Investment Advisors, and more. Additional topics include public speaking, gender and business negotiations, building a personal board of advisors, ethics, entrepreneurship, dealing with bullying, and more. All workshops are taught by leading trainers, speakers and professionals in business, law and other dynamic industries.

Adults who have a relationship with and knowledge of a student’s abilities may nominate a fellow for LTI online here. There is no limit to the amount of students a person may nominate. However, students do not need to be nominated by anyone in order to apply.

To be eligible, applicants must:

have at least one parent that is a member of an underserved racial minority group (African-American, Latino, Native American);
